BACK ON TRACK?


THE Metrolink expansion could still get back on track after a change of heart by the government.
The tram network already serves areas between Manchester and Bury, Altrincham and Eccles. But plans for three new routes to Ashton, Oldham and Rochdale and south Manchester and the airport, were scrapped in July because of rising costs.
This was the signal for the council's Labour group to mobilise opposition to the plan by organising demonstrations as well as planning an assault on this year's Labour Party conference.
To say the mass protests were impressive is an understatement - many of those involved claimed they had never seen such a united turnout opposed to a government decision!
And all the hard work looks to have paid off because Transport Minister Tony McNulty has now said a revised financial package was now being considered.
He told the BBC Politics Show in the North West: "We are having very serious discussions with Manchester and I would say that they have been extremely fruitful and productive.
"The future of light rail isn't completely dead in Manchester or elsewhere but there are serious questions we need to look at in terms of the various aspects of funding."
Tameside Council's Executive Member for transport, Cllr Alan Whitehead, said: "I welcome what the minister had to say but there's a fair way to go yet.
"What we need is his support to convince the Treasury that we can refund and repackage Metrolink.
"It's not just reducing costs, it's changing the whole package so that the public sector and private sector share the cost of the scheme."
The breakthrough follows a large campaign by north west politicians and the public for the government to reconsider its decision.
A petition of about 41,500 signatures from people who wanted to see phase three of the Metrolink completed was collected.
