Andrew Bennett said "In 1997 the first Labour Government for 18 years was elected. Coming to power promising fairness for the many, Labour set about targeting help to those who needed it most, families, pensioners and children. The years of Tory under funding in our schools and hospitals have been halted as has the decline in police numbers.
For the first time since 1975 unemployment has fallen to under 1 million. Over 250,000 young people have found work or training through the New Deal, and this has now been extended to the over 50s. All this is helping Britain back to work.
Also, under Labour, Britain has been one of the leading nations in facing up to the problem of global warming. As the Chair of the Select Committee responsible for regeneration and housing, I know just how much the Government is doing to bring life back into our towns and cities. Similarly, at a local level, Tameside's Labour Council is investing in the people's priorities: the environment, regeneration and tackling crime and disorder. I am proud to be part of the strong local Labour Team delivering improvements to the communities in my constituency.
Of course there is still a great deal to do, but Labour will continue - at both local and national level - to invest in the key public services, and help to rebuild strong and vibrant communities."
